Russia Resumes Attacks on Ukraine After Brief Easter Ceasefire Collapses

Kyiv, Ukraine — Russian forces initiated a widespread missile and drone offensive across eastern and southern Ukraine overnight, mere hours after a temporary Easter truce declared by President Vladimir Putin expired, Ukrainian officials confirmed Monday. The escalation underscores mounting challenges faced by the United States and allied nations in brokering a sustained peace agreement with Moscow.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russian troops launched 96 drones and three missiles, targeting the Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy regions. Defense systems intercepted 42 drones, while an additional 47 were electronically redirected, mitigating potential damage. Though no fatalities or significant infrastructure losses were immediately reported, authorities in the southern port city of Mykolaiv confirmed direct missile strikes.

The swift resurgence of hostilities follows a fleeting pause orchestrated by Putin, who had unilaterally proclaimed a ceasefire for Orthodox Easter. The abrupt return to large-scale assaults highlights stalled diplomatic efforts, as U.S. officials continue pressing for a durable ceasefire amid intensifying global calls to de-escalate the conflict.

Ukrainian defense forces emphasized the strategic coordination required to counter the latest barrage, which involved repelling attacks across multiple fronts. The strikes mark one of the largest drone deployments in recent weeks, signaling Russia’s continued reliance on asymmetric tactics amid dwindling missile stockpiles.

As tensions mount, international observers warn that the collapse of the Easter truce may foreshadow a protracted phase of violence, further straining Ukraine’s defenses and humanitarian resources. Global leaders are set to convene emergency talks this week to address the deteriorating security landscape.
