Israel Intensifies Gaza Bombardment as Hamas Rejects Truce Proposal

Israeli forces continued their offensive across Gaza on Tuesday, a day after strikes killed at least 54 Palestinians. The escalation follows Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow to expand military operations after Hamas rejected Israel’s latest temporary ceasefire offer, insisting instead on a permanent end to the war.

The fate of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander remains unknown after Hamas fighters reportedly recovered the body of a guard who had held him captive. The militant group has not provided further details on Alexander’s condition.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 51,157 Palestinians have been killed and 116,724 wounded since the war began 18 months ago. The Gaza Government Media Office estimates the death toll exceeds 61,700, including thousands believed buried under rubble.

The conflict was triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, which killed 1,139 people and saw more than 200 taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent military campaign has led to widespread destruction in Gaza, with mediation efforts so far failing to secure a lasting ceasefire.
