Explosions at a munitions storage facility in Russia’s Vladimir Region have begun to diminish, though authorities warn of lingering risks and unresolved damage, regional Governor Alexander Avdeyev announced Wednesday.
“Detonations at the warehouses are gradually subsiding, but comprehensive surveys and impact assessments will be required,” Avdeyev stated via Telegram. As a precaution, schools, educational institutions, and several businesses in the region’s Kirzhach district will remain closed Wednesday, with select roads also blocked to traffic.
The Russian Defense Ministry attributed the incident to a fire at a military unit that triggered munitions detonations in the depot. Approximately 450 people were evacuated from the military site, seven nearby villages, and 12 summer cottage communities, with displaced residents relocated to temporary shelters.
No casualties have been reported, though officials emphasized the need for further inspections to gauge structural and environmental impacts. The incident underscores vulnerabilities in Russia’s military infrastructure amid heightened scrutiny of storage protocols.
Authorities have not yet provided a timeline for reopening closed areas or restoring normal operations.
